In the arts and literature, an unadorned,
naturalistic approach to the subject matter.
The term realism may also refer to a movement
in mid-19th-century European art, a reaction
against Romantic and Classical idealization
and a rejection of conventional academic
subjects, such as mythology, history, and
sublime landscapes. The painters Courbet and
Daumier represent 19th-century Realism in
France: both chose to paint scenes from
contemporary life, using their art to expose
injustice in society. Courbet shocked the
public by exhibiting large canvases that
depicted ordinary people.
